Participation in India Water Week

Mr. Som Nath Poudel, Officiating Chair, GWP Nepal/JVS and Mr. Surya Nath Upadhyay, Secretary General, GWP Nepal/JVS participated in the India Water Week (IWW) 2013 held at Vigyan Bhawan, Maulana Azad road in Delhi from 8 to 12 April, 2013.
Mr. Poudel chaired a session of the seminar on “Different Capacities and Different Roles- Empowering South Asian Women for Climate Change Adaptation” on 11 April, 2013. Similarly, Mr. Upadhyay was one of the panelists in the second session “Water Cooperation; Across Sectors and Borders for the Efficient and Sustainable use of Water” in the Regional Day Programme of GWP SAS on “Improved Efficiency for Increased Resilience to Climate Change; an Integrated water Resources Management Perspective” on 12 April, 2013.
Country Consultation Workshop on Water Security and Climate Resiliency Program South Asia

The Country Consultation Workshop on Country Status of Climate Resilience Development in Nepal was organized by GWP Nepal/JVS on 7 March, 2013 at Hotel de l’ Annapurna, Kathmandu intending to seek the inputs of various stakeholders that would guide the in-country implementation and future collaboration for the DFID funded Water Security and Climate Resiliency Program South Asia being implemented under the GWP Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP). The program was attended by the experts from GWPO, GWP SAS, governmental organizations, Members of GWP Nepal/JVS, NGOs and university.Various presentations were made to facilitate the consultation. Dr. Keshav Prasad Sharma, Member, GWP Nepal/JVS made a meticulous presentation entitled Highlights of Country Situation through Country Status Paper with Stress on Gaps.
Similarly, Mr. Chaminda Rajapakse, Senior Network Officer, GWPO, briefed on GWP Portfolio of Climate Resilience Programmes in his presentation. Prof. Ashutosh Kumar Shukla, (Moderator), Member, GWP Nepal/JVS moderated the discussion thereafter. Finally, Mr. Batu Krishna Upreti, resource person made a presentation on Mobilization of Additional Financial Resources and Way Forward where he talked about the climate change financing in Nepal and how it is being channelized.
12th issue of HYDRO Nepal

The journal “HYDRO Nepal” published its 12th Issue in January, 2013. This Issue of HYDRO Nepal includes the peer reviewed articles from national and international scholars. Some of the highlights of this Issue were:
- World Bank’s 2012Ganges Strategic Basin Assessment: A view from Nepal by S.B. Pun
- National River Linking Project of India by Naveen Mangal Joshi
- Monte Carlo Simulation for Economic Analysis of Hydro Power pumped Storage Project in Nepal by Kaspar Vereide, Leif Lia and Lars
- Satellite based Precipitation Estimation for Hydropower Development by Bijay Tamrakar and Knut Alfredsen
- An Integrated approach for Long Term Soultion of Flooding: A study for the Eastern Chitwan Valley by Achyut Man Singh
Besides these, book review on “International Water Courses Law and a perspective on Nepal India Cooperation” by Mr. Surya Nath Upadhyay has been done. The journal has played an important role in disseminating various dimensions of water related issues, approaches towards them and the efforts to find out the proper solutions.
Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of GWP Nepal/JVS was held on 28 February, 2013 at the Hotel Himalaya, Kupondole Lalitpur. On the same occasion, the JVS Lecture Series which has been a practice to organize on this occasion was also held. The theme of this year’s lecture was “Nepal’s Forestry Sector, its Strength, Challenges, Policy and Future Course of Action”. Dr. Krishna Chandra Paudel, Secretary, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, the Government of Nepal made a meticulous and impressive presentation on the topic. The Lecture was participated by students from various universities, water experts and other relevant stakeholders. There was an active participation during the discussion. The presenter answered various quarries on the subject and clarified the policy of the government and its implementation during the discussion.
Mr. Iswer Raj Onta, Regional Chair, GWP SAS gave the end note and vote of thanks to the presenter for an eye opening presentation. He also said that Nepal can prosper if the forest and water resources are exploited optimally for the economic benefit of the country without undermining the environment and the social needs.
GWP Nepal/JVS at Nepal National Water Week (NNWW), 2013

On 17 January, 2013, GWP Nepal/JVS participated in the Policy Consultative Meeting for Nepal National Water Week (NNWW), 2013 organized by the NNWW Organizing Committee headed by Secretary of the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), Mr. Bishwa Prakash Pandit. The committee comprises members from government, non-government institutions, academic institutions and business houses, GWP Nepal/JVS being one of them. The consortium of government and non-government organizations has been organizing this event since 2009 and has been able to establish a trend of close collaboration and send strong ripples of awareness messages to the people and to the government.
World Water Day (WWD) on 22 March, 2013 and World Meteorological Day (WMD) on 23rd March, 2013 were celebrated this year too with a week-long program (17 – 23 March, 2013). Mr. Som Nath Poudel, Officiating chair, GWP Nepal/JVS attended the Opening Ceremony on 17th March, 2013 at Nepal Tourism Board, Exhibition Road, Kathmandu.
The events of this year’s NNWW included training on remote sensing and rainwater harvesting, water heritage walk, installation of rainwater harvesting system, visit to ODF zone at Chitwan, groundwater symposium and online E-discussions on water cooperation and many more. As in the previous years, GWP Nepal/JVS made a modest financial contribution to facilitate the implementation of the program along with the technical contribution from the water experts of this organization.
Book published on International Water Law and Bilateral Cooperation

A book entitled “International Watercourses Law and a Perspective on Nepal-India Cooperation” by Mr. Surya Nath Upadhyay, Secretary General, GWP Nepal/JVS was launched amidst more than 120 participants including water experts and journalists of Nepal on 15 January, 2013. Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani, former Finance and Foreign Minister was the chief guest. Hon’ble Minister and Mr. Yuvraj Sangroula, former Attorney General, made extensive comments on the book. Mr. Surya Nath Upadhyay put some light over Author’s perspective on the book. The book was published and distributed by Ekta Books Distributors Pvt. Ltd., Nepal.
GWP Nepal/JVS organized aRound Table Discussion on the book on 24 February 2013 at Alpha Beta Complex, New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. The Program was participated by various political leaders, water experts, students and journalists. It was an occasion to discuss Nepal-India Cooperation on Water Resources and its Challenges. The participants showed their regards to the organizer and said that the discourses on such matters should be held at times that facilitate both knowledge sharing and learning. The discussants and commentators agreed that the book has been first of its kind and for the water experts, political leaders and knowledge seekers it has proven to be a milestone.
